Deal Breakers and Makers

In the last few years, my definition of appropriate and in(appropriate) has been blurred, crossed, and squiggled many times. There are certain things that, while hilarious in theory (see above cuff links), by actually purchasing them one would definitely pole-vault over said line into loser territory.

However, the jury is still out on clever graphic tees. I was about to start in on a tirade about how I hate each and every one. But then, while “researching,” I caught myself laughing (ever so quietly so my students wouldn’t think I was taking crazy pills) in my classroom looking at these tees.

Yet, I can’t decide if I would like them that much on a human. The fine line is drawn between douche and awesome (both bags) (what? like you’ve never called your awesome friend an “awesome-bag” before!?). Even the attitude of the wearer is key. Are they self-deprecating? An actual jack-ass attempting to be self-depracating? A hipster and a frat guy (yes, I like stereotypes) sporting the same “Gun Show” graphic tee is not sending the same message.

Something I do like is the “spin-off.” Youtube videos, 80’s sitcoms, and HBO series are game for a witty image/saying scrawled across the chest. Recognizing and giggling about these references makes me feel cool. I like being part of the in-crowd and I definitely like “inside jokes.” (Something about excluding others makes me feel better inside.) Spotting a “Carcetti for Mayor” or “Jesse and the Rippers” would make me want to high-five strangers.

Unfortunately, “Cougar Hunter” would just warrant a slapping.

Created because: “Scrabble Cuff Links” were nearly (key word) purchased for W
